The Open Group hosted its latest event in Croke Park in the vibrant city of Dublin, April 29 – May 2, welcoming attendees that included decision-makers, Enterprise Architects, engineers, technologists and end-users representing many businesses and governments. The theme of this event and a topic which ran through many of the speaker sessions was ‘Digital in Practice’, covering not only the emerging digital technologies but also the standards, architectures and business frameworks that support and enable the transition to, and implementation of, the modern Digital Enterprise.

The tech city of Bangalore was the venue for The Open Group India Conference and Awards held Feb 22 – 24, 2018.

Speakers and delegates from seventeen countries converged in Bangalore to participate in this international event, which was supported by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India. Making Standards Work™ for Your Digital Agenda was the theme for this year, in line with the realization of the importance of standards.

Digitalization is forcing the convergence of networks and platforms that have traditionally remained separate. Mobile networks have previously been the domain of telecommunications providers, but as new mobile generations emerge the reach of the network is also becoming an enterprise domain.

We spoke with Thomas Magedanz, Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the Technische Universität Berlin and Director of the software-based networks competence center at Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS, about the expectations for 5G networks, why 5G technologies are being tested with Smart Cities applications and how standards can drive the global network interoperability that 5G will require. Thomas was a keynote speaker at The Open Group Berlin 2017 in April.
