Highlights of The Open Group FACE™ and SOSA™ Expo and Technical Interchange Meeting

By The Open Group

The US Air Force-hosted The Open Group FACE™ & SOSA™ Expo and Technical Interchange Meeting (TIM) event was held on September 17, 2019 in Dayton, Ohio at the Dayton Convention Center.

The event drew over 500 people from Government, Industry, and Academia.  This was an opportunity to see the progress being made for both functionality and interoperability of modular open system environments in both the Future Airborne Capability Environment™ (FACE) and the Sensor Open System Architecture™ (SOSA) consortia.  Members of The Open Group FACE and SOSA Consortia presented technical papers and showcased their FACE and SOSA solutions for new war-fighting capabilities for the services. Hosted by the US Air Force Life Cycle Management Center (AFLCMC) and sponsored by Green Hills Software, this Expo & TIM was geared toward program managers and procurement managers across all the services as well as their contractors and suppliers.

The TIM also featured presentations on using the FACE Technical Standard and business practices, the SOSA Technical Standard (Snapshot) and business practices, and other DoD leadership.  The keynote speaker Mr. Mitch Miller, the technical advisor for avionics to the AFLCMC, gave a presentation on the “Emerging Air Force Architecture Approach.” That presentation included the progress toward a government reference architecture for avionics based on multiple standards, with some standards already at TRL 9.

After the successful TIM & Expo, the FACE and SOSA Consortia held their regular face-to-face Member meetings to continue their work on modular open systems.  These meetings drew another 300+ people consisting of Government, Industry, and Academia working together to build their respective open standards and supporting ecosystems. Of note was the first joint discussion between the FACE Operating System Segment Working Group and the SOSA Software Working Group. We look forward to continuing the collaboration.
